Movies: KANK

This was one movie I had been wanting to watch for sometime now. I finally did manage to watch it and that too on one of the hindi movie channels with 12+ breaks. That in itself is an achievement and the movie did grab my attention to bear with the ad breaks. As they say content is the king!

KANK - This is what Svety said when she saw the movie almost ages ago.I loved the movie for the few moments it had and the theme - the complexity of relationships, the choice between compromise and love, the lies , the truth , the memories that last forever.Love, they say, isn't easy to come by. And sometimes even if it comes to one; will one do whatever it takes?

In the song Mitwa the lyrics say "Love will find a way"

and the farewell trance of the movie says :

"No distance is too great
for your memory will live on
let me live in the sweetness of your heart
you and I will live
Will live on in our dreams
Never, Never say Good bye"

These words I hold close to my heart.

My favorite moment in the movie - SRK and Rani walking towards each other, chatting for 4 and a half minutes on the mobile as they walk towards each other and are to meet in the next 5 minutes. SRK and Rani at the signal facing each other and Priety coming in between. SRK with a bunch of roses - handing it over to Priety and yet keeping that one flower for Rani. Thats the picture i decided to add to my blog cos thats the scene that will last frm this movie etched in my memory for sometime.

Movies : Paris, je t'aime

If there is some movie that has touched my heart of late, its Paris , I Love You. It is not overtly emotional or underplayed. It is real. It is how people are. It is about a city; more so it is about people and most of all, it is about love. The feeling that does touch each one of us, each day.

Paris, I love you - is a movie collectif or collection of many 5 minute movies on the theme of Pais and love. I am not sure how much character does Paris really add to the movie. For me it could be a Mumbai and Delhi. It's the sensitivity with which each movie is dealt that really takes your breath away, it did take mine.

The movie was highly recommended to me by a friend and I went for it cos another friend agreed to come. It was a late night show on a weekday and we both had to rush to catch it. I don't know if I would have gone for it without the recommendation from my friend or the company of the other one. Thanks guys, you make life worth it.

Must Must Must watch it!

Movies : Life in a METRO

Life in a METRO - I primarily went for the movie cos of word of mouth. My friends recommended it and said I might enjoy it. I must say I wasn't disappointed.

Life in a METRO is not really about life in a metro. Its about relationships , about the quest of love and life and in this quest how one often forgets to live. The movie is good in bits and pieces and has its moments. It is also real in more ways than one or so I felt. After all life is all about taking chances. But some pieces are disconnected and somehow I couldn't empathize with the characters at some level. There was a disconnect but despite all of it , I think it was the worth the time.

The scene I remember is the one where Shilpa Shetty escapes from Shiney's house and then as he follows her breaks down confessing how all this makes her feel like a slut. I guess the guilt is so real that it hits, after all are a part of a society where there is no difference in being individualistic and being selfish , where to stand up for oneself is looked down upon and where indulgence is scorned at.

It's the humor that is the hero of the story. It's dark and elusive and often slaps you in your face as you are laughing through it. And you suddenly wonder if you should laugh at all.

Catch it if you can !

Movie : भेजा fry

Bheja Fry is mindless. Its fun. I think it would have been good as a play. Its a laugh riot from beginning to end - at least thats what I felt sitting in the cinema hall. I was amused in bits and pieces and its a good movie to catch up with a bunch of crazy friends.

But that is it?
If I was to think about it, it's just a situational comedy - mindless and crazy. There isn't anything more to it. If there was a deeper message that the director/ story was trying to convey , I didn't

Movie: Helen of Troy

It's only fair that I also mention that I also saw another historical on DVD last weekend and I absolutely loved it. May be its because of my bollywoodish sensibility that I liked this romance, thriller and action packed movie more than 300.

It was also because this was a second movie in a row after Troy , based on the Trojan war that I watched and I did enjoy it. I guess if you can get a dvd do try and catch it, it's worth a watch. It looks authentic and is not as misrepresentative of the past as 300 though it has its moments of deviance too.

Also because its more mythical and less historical ,there is some scope for manipulation as is the case with every piece of mythology.

I enjoyed it , I hope you will too.

Movie: 300

300. I am not a person who has been into historicals ever. I didn't even know what this movie was about till we decided to got for it and then realised it was about the Spartans and Persians. History is intriguing but it is so often MISREPRESENTED and changes its meaning and significance depending upon the source of origin, that it often becomes futile. This movie is PROPAGANDA at its best. West versus East and it shocks me that we should still showcase the barbarism and soak ourselves in the pride of the so called valour. This is an interesting review of the movie with all its intricacies and details, I will abstain from commenting further.

For me 300 was comical , ridiculous and meaningless. Really I would have preferred Namaste London and did enjoy bheja fry more than it , have been dying to catch some mindless comedies bollywood ishtyle. It was a graphic treat but that's not what i watch movies for. The portrayal of Persians is what appalled me most. Please watch it at your risk.

The only people who can possibly learn from such an overtly stupid movie are the directors of mythological soaps and historicals in India in terms of its production - cinematography and art direction. The rest of it is all a FRAUD.

Avoidable!

Movie: Namesake

(Its serendipity. I was planning to a review "Shantaram" -write on the book that I finished a week ago and unfortunately it took a backseat. The serendipity is that the movie I went for and am writing about currently is by the director who's next movie will be "Shantaram." And it has suddenly come to forefront.)

Namesake is splendid. Its a collage of moments from a lifetime. Some may find it incomplete and others superficial. But its the collage of moments that matter. We all have those moments in our lifetime that stand out. The defining moments of life.

My reviews normally talk of the moments that touched me somewhere deep inside. In this movie the one scene that really was hard hitting was the moment when Tabu is told to close her eyes and think of the moment when she felt "happy not thrilled just deeply happy". It held my attention and I will try the same. Close my eyes and look for the moment of happiness.

Death - loss of loved one- is also an experience that each one of us go through. I heard Mira Nair talk of it in one of the interviews and after watching the movie I agree that if it was her objective to convey the same then she has been successful 100%. Death is an experience that makes me smile and makes life and its challenges so petty. It puts all in perspective and makes one think of the purpose of existence - inspires one to make a difference somewhere.

Its an amazing movie. I would say - go for it!
